USA Weekly: Interview with Patrick Kerpan, CEO and Co-Founder at Cohesive Networks

Patrick Kerpan, CEO and Co-Founder at Cohesive Networks, chats with USA Weekly

Starting a business is a big achievement for many entrepreneurs, but maintaining one is the larger challenge. There are many standard challenges that face every business whether they are large or small. It is not easy running a company, especially in a fast-paced, ever-changing business world. Technology advances, new hiring strategies, and now, political changes coming with the new administration, all add to the existing business challenges that entrepreneurs, business owners, and executives have to deal with.

Maximizing profits, minimizing expenses and finding talented staff to keep things moving seem to be top challenges for both SMBs and large corporations. We have been interviewing companies from around the world to discover what challenges they are facing in their businesses. We also asked each company to share business advice they would give to a younger version of themselves.

What does your company do?

PK: Cohesive Networks provides cloud-native security and networking software for enterprises. Over 3,200 customers use our VNS3 software to provide security, connectivity, and integration for their applications in cloud. VNS3 is a software-only virtual network appliance that allows cloud users to add data in motion encryption, application layer firewalls, multicast protocol support, and region peering on top of network infrastructures. Cohesive Networks is part of many cloud provider catalogues, including Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and the Google Cloud Platform.

What is your role? What do you enjoy most about your role?

PK: My role spans the breadth of our cloud security business; helping define and create the products, helping create and project our message, and helping sell to, and support our customers.
As one of the founders of Cohesive Networks, the thing I enjoy most broadly is the act of creation. You work with a team of people, sitting in a room – initially with nothing but an idea and the will to pursue it. And then fast forward, months and years, and you have delivered a product that improves your customers’ lives. In our case they can pursue their business ambitions more securely than ever before.

What are the biggest challenges in your business right now?

PK: The networking industry giants get a pass on major security gaffs – think backdoors in Barracuda devices. It is a version of “too big to fail”. We all make mistakes, but some of their issues have been mind boggling bad. As a smaller and younger company, are held to a higher standard. Being a relatively new entrant to the market has some drawbacks but ultimately that creates a culture and reputation of accountability for us at Cohesive Networks.

If you could go back in time, what business advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

PK: I would tell my younger self to take the risk being “too decisive”. The business cycle moves so fast that there isn’t time to “take decisions.” When I was younger I delayed decisions because I had this idea that one can wait for all the data and facts, which never are truly available anyway, and then decide. Remember that at some point you must “make decisions”, meaning use the data you have, move forward, and move fast.
