Recognized Leader and Outperformer

In the GigaOm Radar for Cloud Networking v5 (2026), Cohesive Networks was “positioned as a Leader and Outperformer in the Maturity/Platform Play quadrant” — GigaOm’s top classification, awarded for VNS3’s recent security releases and its development pipeline of LLM-related features.

GigaOm credits VNS3 for network policy definition spanning GUI, API, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and CloudFormation); for segmentation across intra-cloud, multicloud, and hybrid-cloud environments down to the microsegment; and for content-aware Layer 7 traffic processing, including NGINX and HAProxy integrations for SSL/TLS termination and load balancing.

The report also notes that Cohesive already uses its VNS3 architecture to deliver SASE-style connectivity — partner, workforce, and customer connectivity; on-prem-to-cloud connectivity; and multicloud API connectivity — the same categories broken out below.

GigaOm Radar for Cloud Networking, with Cohesive Networks positioned as a Leader and Outperformer

Cohesive Networks approach to Multi-cloud Network Fabric called Federation Networks, targets a specific pain point: the high cost, architectural complexity, and lack of fine-grained control that comes with relying purely on a cloud provider’s native networking stack (like Transit Gateways, Direct Connect Connectors, NAT Gateways, Cloud VPN and Endpoint Firewalls).

At its core, VNS3 accomplishes this by creating a Customer-Controlled Overlay Network (a software-defined network layer) that runs on top of the native public or private cloud infrastructure.

Here are some of the critical elements that combine to create your fabric.

THE TRANSIT ADVANTAGE

Cloud provider transit gateways acts as centralized hubs to connect multiple VPCs/VNETs and on-premises networks. However, it can become complex with routing tables, lacks deep traffic visibility, and incurs significant data processing fees.

  • The VNS3 Alternative: Instead of using the cloud provider’s proprietary transit hub, you deploy a mesh of VNS3 Controllers (lightweight virtual appliances) across your VPCs, regions, or even different cloud providers (Azure, GCP, OCI, IBM, and more).

  • How Federation Works: These controllers peer with each other to build a seamless, encrypted overlay network. To your cloud-deployed services and virtual machines, the entire multi-region or multi-cloud setup looks like a single, unified local area network (LAN) with a flat address space. It completely bypasses the need for comlex structures to route between isolated cloud environments.

THE EDGE ADVANTAGE

Cloud providers use specialized gateway connections (like AWS Direct Connect or Azure ExpressRoute) to tie enterprise data centers to virtual networks, often creating vendor lock-in and rigid setups.

The VNS3 Alternative: VNS3 functions as a hybrid virtual device acting as an SSL/IPSec VPN concentrator, router, and switch all in one.

Federated Edge: Because VNS3 is entirely software-defined, you can establish highly available, active-active BGP connections and IPSec tunnels to almost any data center firewall (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, etc.) right from the overlay network. It essentially builds a secure “Federated Edge” that treats your on-premises data center, edge locations, and cloud containers as equal nodes on the same mesh, without requiring native cloud-specific connectors.

THE DATA TAX LOOPHOLE

Managed NAT Gateways are notoriously expensive because cloud vendors charge an hourly runtime fee plus a progressive per-gigabyte data processing fee (usually around $0.045 per GB). For data-heavy environments, this quickly blows out the budget.

The VNS3 Alternative: Cohesive Networks offers a specific packaging of their platform called VNS3 NATe.

The FinOps Benefit: NATe runs on standard, lightweight virtual machine instances to provide outbound Network Address Translation for private subnets. Instead of paying a variable tax on every gigabyte of data passing through, you only pay for the baseline VM runtime cost. This can reduce traditional cloud NAT costs by up to 70% while giving you raw access to underlying network tools like tcpdump and traffic translation and direction rules that native NAT gateways conceal.

THE FIREWALL ADVANTAGE

Deploying a right-sized VNET/VPC-sized endpoint firewall is one of the most compelling architectural shifts for enterprises operating at scale. The standard alternatives in native cloud architectures are usually, centralized inspection hubs or managed cloud firewalls (e.g., AWS Network Firewall or Azure Firewall).  Both alternatives run into severe cost, latency, and operational walls at scale. Distributing a lightweight, stateful endpoint firewall directly inside every VPC/VNet solves several critical enterprise challenges.

The VNS3 Alternative:

  • Massive FinOps Savings at Scale
  • Eliminating the Centralized Hub “Hairpin” Bottleneck
  • Latency & Congestion
  • Microsegmentation & Blast-Radius Containment
  • Multi-Cloud Policy Consistency

When architecting a network via VNS3 Federation, you are able to treat the underlying cloud provider as nothing more than raw compute and “dumb pipes,” leaving all the intelligent routing, security, and address management to your own software layer. Yet, all of the underlying cloud services and functions are still available and equally able to be federated across your multi-cloud fabric.
